General

The covers in Budapest are made of metal or concrete and are rectangular , round , square or elliptical in shape. Additional cover shapes include ones resembling a refuse-collection scoop , hexagonal or octagonal .
In many cases, when round covers are intended for pavements, they are surrounded by a square frame, which greatly facilitates the paving work around them .

No coloured covers were found in Budapest, but there is a relatively large number of gold-tinted covers .

Covers intended for the Budapest municipality or its related bodies (such as the sewer department – FCM) usually bear the city emblem .

The intended purpose of the cover is often shown: water (the letter W, or the word VIZ ), drainage covers are identifiable by their drainage slots , sewer covers bear the name of Budapest’s sewer department (FŐVAROSI CSATORNÁZÁSI MŰVEK) , and so on.

Sometimes the year of manufacture appears on the covers .

Covers with information
Roman Limes front-line plates (Danubian Limes) - Plates placed on the ground in Budapest marking the line of forts, camps and stations of the Roman army along the Danube (Pannonian Limes)
Kálvin Square plates - 95 plates representing Martin Luther’s 95 theses, installed in the square for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (1517). The plates feature quotes from Hungarian reformers and authors
Also found are covers belonging to the “Stolpersteine” project, created by German artist Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of the Nazis. These plaques are usually placed in front of the homes of the victims and additional covers.

Manufacturers
Surprisingly, the leading manufacturer of covers in Budapest (at least at the time of writing) is the German manufacturer Hydrotec , but there are also covers from local manufacturers: Szegedi Öntöde Kft , Patina Öntöde and others.
In addition, covers from major international manufacturers can be found: PAm , ACO Group and others.

Standards
The international EN124 standard and load classes D400 or E600 are common among both local manufacturers and international ones.
The Hungarian MSZ standard also appears .
Additional international standards were found as well: the German MPA , DIN 19584 and others.
