General

The covers in Vienna are generally made of metal , concrete , or plastic (composite materials) , and their shapes are square , rectangular , round , or elliptical .
In addition, there are some quite distinctive shapes: octagonal and also hexagonal .
There is a small number of round covers intended for sidewalks that are surrounded by a square frame, which greatly facilitates the paving work around them .

No colored covers were found in Vienna, nor gilded ones (except for those belonging to the “Stumbling Stones” project (Stolpersteine), which are not exactly covers) .
The city emblem does not appear on the covers.

Some of the covers are intended for Wien Energie , others for the water utility Wiener Wasser , for various telecommunications companies , and so on.

For a significant portion of the covers, their purpose cannot be determined. Among the others, there are drainage covers (characterized by drainage slots) , water covers marked with the letter W , and on gas/heating covers the word Fernwärme (district heating) frequently appears , and so on.

Walk of Fame
Not without reason is Vienna known as the “Capital of Music”. The city has a trail launched in 2001 and dedicated to composers, conductors, musicians, and opera singers, all from the field of classical music. On the plaques set into the ground, within a star, appear the name of the composer (or artist), a relief portrait, their signature, and their years of life .

Manufacturers
Many covers were made by the Austrian manufacturer Wallner Neubert , or by the German MeierGuss . In addition, covers made by the French PAm , the German ACO , and many other manufacturers can also be found.

Standards
The most common standards are the European standard EN124 and the various load classes (A15 - F900) . In addition, many covers bear the Austrian B5110 certification mark , the Austrian ÖNORM , and the ÜA-Marking, which is also an Austrian standard . Additional standards were found, but in smaller quantities.
