The company founded by Josiah Stone in 1831 was originally intended for the manufacture of copper nails for shipyards. In 1842, George Preston and John Prestige joined a company called J. Stone & Co, which expanded its activities to metal products, mainly in the field of railways. The Deptford plant closed in 1969.
