General


The manhole covers in New York are generally made of metal or concrete , though plastic (composite) covers also exist.
All concrete covers found on the site are not manhole covers but serve as information covers .
Their shapes include rectangular , round , square , and octagonal .
A bow-tie-shaped cover was also identified in New York.

No colored covers were found in the city; however, golden covers do exist.
The city emblem does not appear on the covers.

Many covers are designated for the City of New York , for the energy company ConEdison , and for other entities.

The intended function appears on some covers: sewer , water , traffic , and others.

A relatively large number of covers bear markings indicating that they were manufactured in India .

In the New York subway system, one can find a sculpture depicting an alligator emerging from a manhole (from a cover typical of New York ).

Gregg LeFevre Plaques
New York features a large collection of plaques created by artist Gregg LeFevre. These are golden “information” covers with striking graphics, each dedicated to a specific theme.
Examples include:

Union Square Trail - a series of plaques encircling Union Square, depicting the square’s history
Park Avenue Plaques - plaques illustrating historic buildings in what was once the center of New York’s architectural community
Library Trail - plaques at the entrance to the New York Public Library featuring quotations from well-known books
Apollo Theater Walk of Fame - commemorating artists who performed at the venue

Most covers do not bear the manufacturer’s name. Manufacturers identified include the American company ej , General Foundries (also American, though some of its covers were produced in India) , and several others.
