In the picture painted in 1958 by the Belgian painter Paul Delvaux, it is hard to ignore the lid next to the woman’s figure, which expresses (probably in the painter’s opinion) a realistic reality.

Das vorliegende Bild kann als melancholischer Rückblick auf Vergangenes interpretiert werden. In der Bildmitte steht eine schwarz gekleidete Frau, die einem in die Tiefe schreitenden Leichenzug nachblickt. Auf einem von Gaslaternen beleuchteten Weg tragen zwei Männer einen in Leinen gehüllten Leichnam auf eine Hügellandschaft zu, aus der sich einige altertümliche Ruinen erheben. Zu diesem Totenreich besteht offensichtlich keine Verbindung mehr, die Leitungen der Telegrafenmasten sind gekappt.

Paul Delvaux’s mysterious dream images betray their inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico and his "pittura metafisica". Like Magritte, Delvaux, although taking part in the Surrealists’ exhibitions, always kept a critical distance to the movement.
The present painting may be understood as a melancholic, retrospective glance at the past. In the centre appears a woman in black looking after a funeral cortege moving into the picture’s depth. On a path lit by gas lights, two men carry a shroud-covered corpse towards a hilly landscape from which several ancient ruins rise up. Obviously, this realm of the dead is no longer connected to the real world, for the cables on the telegraph poles have been cut
