"The City of Flowers Beppu" is a project that aims to mark the city as one where flowers bloom all year round. For each month a flower that blooms that month is chosen. The project began in 1986 and the manhole covers began to be laid in 1991
The current cover indicates the month of December, and the flower is Ōmurasaki (Rhododendron) the flower associated with the city, and around bamboo sticks art that the city excels at.
