General


The manhole covers in Tokyo are made of metal , concrete , or plastic (composite materials) , and their shapes are circular , square , or rectangular .

As in other cities in Japan, many covers in Tokyo are colored . No gilded covers were found.
The city emblem sometimes appears on the covers .

The purpose of the covers is often indicated: sewer covers bear the word 下水道 , water-related terms appear on water covers 量水器 , 電 appears on electricity covers , etc.

Many covers feature backgrounds composed of ginkgo leaves and cherry blossoms (sakura), which represent the city.
Other covers depict landscapes and additional plants , sporting events , and buildings in the city .
