General


The covers in Kyoto are made of metal or concrete and are round , rectangular , or square .

As in other cities in Japan, many covers in Kyoto are colored . Gilded covers are usually plaques used for informational purposes . The city emblem appears frequently on the covers .

On some covers the purpose is not indicated. There are covers bearing the word 消火栓 (fire hydrant) , or a combination of words related to water (水道メータ - water meter) , the logo of the gas company , and so on.

Unlike other places in Japan, no covers featuring landscape images or famous buildings were found on the site.
